Obviously, the Trek franchise has visited future versions of Earth a ton since then, but in the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3—“People of Earth”—the Trek franchise seems to split the difference....

Disney announced Wednesday that it has cut a content licensing agreement with Sony Pictures, the steward of the cinematic version of Spider-Man (Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales, and all other Spider-Men going back to Tobey Maguire), to host the “Post Pay 1 Window” of all of Sony’s theatrical releases from 2022 to 2026 on Disney streaming services (Disney+ and Hulu), and Disney linear entertainment networks like ABC, Freeform, and FX....

It’s easily the coolest moment we’ve seen yet in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (maybe the second coolest, after a certain convening of several webslingers in Spider-Man: No Way Home): two-thirds of the way through Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Master of the Mystic Arts (Benedict Cumberbatch), stuck for the moment on Earth-838 in a different universe, is brought before the Illuminati, a council of superheroes who do their best to guide history and protect their realm....

For lovers of Marvel cameos and worldbuilding, the most exciting part of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came about halfway through, when Strange is taken by Baron Mordo to face the Illuminati. First introduced in 2005’s New Avengers #7 (written by Brian Michael Bendis and penciled by Steve McNiven), the Illuminati consist of the biggest brains of the Marvel Universe. They exist to make difficult decisions about complex problems, such as sending the Hulk off-planet to prevent further destruction or ridding the Earth of a Skrull invasion....

12.1 Spyfall In mid-December, Den Of Geek popped along to an early screening of the Doctor Who series 12 premiere at a top-secret location in London. We are banned from saying anything spoilery, and nor would we want to, until the episode airs on New Year’s Day on BBC One. But perhaps the best scene in the film is the furious chase sequence in which the Ringwraiths pursue Arwen (Liv Tyler) across the countryside as she races to get Frodo (Elijah Wood) to Rivendell before he succumbs to poisoning from a Morgul blade. This scene is just as action-packed and thrilling as the staircase sequence, but without the slight feeling that the whole thing might be gravitationally impossible at the back of your mind....

Of course there was still the inevitable movie, released in 1984 when it seemed like there was a new King adaptation hitting screens every month. Directed by Mark L. Lester (replacing John Carpenter early in development), with a screenplay by Stanley Mann, the ’84 Firestarter is actually very faithful to the book in terms of narrative and incident. What it lacks, however, is any kind of soul. The ’84 Firestarter is an utterly mechanical effort, with the director putting the actors through their paces in workmanlike fashion and just jumping from plot point to plot point without any sense of the inner workings of the characters or the larger themes....
