See, I hate to break it to you, but you’re probably never going into space. Unless you’re a highly trained technical specialist (well done!) or a billionaire (pay your taxes!), your best shot at seeing Earth from space within your lifetime is the development of realistic-yet-cheap VR headsets. And the thing is, a lot of the time this holds up in sci-fi as well. Space travellers are either living in a post-scarcity utopia, are part of the military, or are some kind of genius scientists....

First out of the gate was Sony, which pushed the untitled follow-up to Spider-Man: Far from Home from July 16, 2021 to November 5, 2021. Remember that latter date for a minute. Sony also removed the sequel to the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from its April 2022 release slot to October 7, 2022. In related non-Marvel news, Uncharted, Sony’s long-developing adaptation of the popular video game, is now moving back up to claim the third Spider-Man movie’s July 16, 2021 position, after being initially bumped to the following October....

“I’m super happy about it. We will be shooting Spider-Man 3 in July in Atlanta,” Holland said, while insisting he doesn’t yet know if he’ll make an appearance alongside other Sony characters like Venom or Morbius, or in future Marvel Studios movies either. “I’m not sure as to what they want me to do.” He confirmed that Zendaya’s MJ will also be back for the next Spider-Man movie, but admitted that the couple might not be in the best place when we rejoin their burgeoning love story....

The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season is jammed with perhaps more old-school references than any episode before. Because the USS Discovery hooks-up with the USS Enterprise, there are probably more Easter eggs than are reasonable. It will likely take several repeat viewings — and a lot of freeze frame — to catch everything in this thrilling episode. And yet! We tried! From classic starship designations, to how you blow up a spaceship, to Sherlock Holmes, and Shakespeare, here are all the Easter eggs and references we caught in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, episode 13, “Such Sweet Sorrow....

The title of the episode, is “An Obol for Charon,” which references the Greek mythological god Charon and the specific way you bribe him. In order to get your soul taken to the right place in the underworld, you’re supposed to give Charon an “Obol” or payment. In ancient Greece, this sometimes meant putting money in the mouths of dead people. In this Star Trek episode it seems to reference the price everyone is paying for flirting with death, or in the case of the Spore Drive, traveling to the “underworld....

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 4 In some ways, “Forget Me Not” is Star Trek: Discovery‘s most ambitious episode yet. It may not include epic space battles or a trip to the Mirror Universe or a jump 930 years into the future, but it does attempt to address the cumulative collective trauma of an entire starship crew that has gone through all of the aforementioned—a narrative endeavor that has much less precedent than bearded Vulcans....

Originality in fiction is often over-rated – Shakespeare didn’t make up his own plots, and simply noting the use of an existing plot or theme is not, in itself, a criticism. However, it is important for a new version of an old story to put its own stamp on that story. Each new version should bring something slightly different to the table and put its own twist on the material....

“The episode that killed Star Trek.” “One of the worst episodes of the whole Star Trek franchise.” “Almost as bad as ‘These Are The Voyages.’” These and similar opinions of “A Night In Sickbay” are all over the Internet. The episode frequently appears on “worst episodes of all time” lists alongside “Spock’s Brain” from The Original Series and Star Trek: Voyager’s “Threshold.” I have no intention of arguing that this is a great or outstanding episode of Star Trek – it’s not....

In The Next Generation episode “The Most Toys,” Kivas Fajo tried to keep Data forever. The idea that someone thought it was okay to “collect” was an oddly self-referential concept for Star Trek even in the 1990s. Just like now, the idea of a Star Trek collectible was a thing hardcore Star Trek fans thought about all the time. But, other than the fact that everyone would actually want to “collect” Data, “The Most Toys” wasn’t actually about Star Trek collectibles....

Rey uses the Force: The Force Awakens Many spines tingled when Daisy Ridley’s plucky heroine embraced her destiny at the climax of The Force Awakens, and faced down the fearsome Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Williams’ powerful scoring of the scene, including his careful placement of Rey’s theme (more on that later), Ren’s theme, and the Force theme, audibly constructs a thrilling new good vs. evil conflict right in front of us....

The little Twi’lek girl in “Devil’s Deal” will grow up to be one of the most recognizable heroes of the Disney canon. Hera stars in Rebels as the pilot and leader of the Ghost crew. Throughout that series she rises in the ranks and is part of the moment the Rebels officially form a unified Alliance against the Empire instead of a loose, hidden network of independent cells....

Clone Force 99 find themselves in the middle of a sea change they don’t fully understand, as Palpatine declares himself Emperor and the Clone Army turns evil. To make matters worse, Admiral Tarkin (the future Grand Moff of A New Hope) sees the clone forces as obsolete and wants to replace them with a new Imperial army. On the run and without purpose, the Bad Batch will have to carve out a new future for themselves in a much more hostile galaxy....

Naturally, with that huge credit, it would only make sense that Netflix would want even more of the horror-sci-fi hit. Well, on that same call, it was revealed that they almost did. Stranger Things season 4 arrives at a particularly fraught time for Netflix. Suffice it to say, Netflix could use a fresh season of one of its biggest hits right now. And that’s what makes the arrival of Stranger Things season 4 so consequential. The sci-fi/horror ‘80s nostalgia trip has been one of Netflix’s most important and popular series since it first premiered in the summer of 2016. Not only that, but this two-part season (volume one, which premieres May 27, contains the first seven episodes of the nine-episode season with episodes 8 and 9 set to premiere as volume 2 on July 1) has been long hyped as the show’s most creatively bold yet, reportedly costing a staggering $30 million per episode....

There are more than enough people – including but not limited to his own wife and children – who’d presumably be happy to see Jasper Chiswell breathe his last. Not least among them Geraint Winn, the Labour MP whose fraudulent charity finances were exposed in episode two, giving Chiswell what he needed to shut down Winn’s blackmail....

Mobius (Owen Wilson) and several of the TVA’s Hunters are looking into the slaughter of an entire team of Hunters at a French church in the Middle Ages. It’s tough to pull off jump scares on the page, but comics are perfect for over-the-top monsters, skin-crawling psychological horror, and the kind of existential terror that can only be inspired by a large stone man in a purple skirt....

The 100 Season 5 Episode 6 This season seems determined to keep most of our cast apart – there’s only really been one episode when they were mostly all together, and already they’re scattered again. That separation can often feel like the most tedious parts of a season, since it’s a bit of a waiting game for when the real action can come. At least this season everyone seems to be up to something equally interesting while they’re apart, even if we still wish they were together for the fun of it....
