From the arrival of series finally fleshing out the stories of characters who’d briefly appeared in its movies (WandaVision, Loki) to more obvious tie-ins and crossovers with the MCU film universe (Yelena in Hawkeye, Wanda in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Marvel TV series are now something very different than they once were just a year or two ago. This is kind of a shame—because while there’s certainly something to be said for the aggressive corporate synergy that’s now connecting dozens of properties across the biggest franchise in the world, it also means that, in order to achieve it, we lost a lot of the riskier programs that told very different kinds of superhero stories Marvel would have never shown on the big screen....

The hype for Spy x Family might catch people by surprise. How can there already be so much excitement for a brand new series? It can’t all be chalked up to the fact that the anime is a collaboration between Studio Wit (Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga) and CloverWorks (Horimiya, My Dress-Up Darling), although their involvement certainly doesn’t hurt. The answer, it turns out, lies with the source material. Spy x Family first launched as a manga in 2019....

So when will this pop off? According to the studio, sometime later this year. Their teaser material simply promised a 2022 release window, but Crunchyroll did recently announce that they licensed the anime. They’ll be streaming it with both English subs and dubs as the episodes release in Japan. The anime will be airing one episode a week, so don’t expect to be able to binge the whole thing at once....

The Marvel Cinematic Universe resides at Disney while DC Entertainment has its home at Warner Bros. Both franchises make bucketloads of money for their respective corporate overlords so there is little incentive for Disney and WB to combine forces and share the wealth. But in the spirit of Marvel’s latest Disney+ series: What if…there was a filmmaker, nay a hero, strong enough to make such a crossover happen? James Gunn is one of the few creatives to have made a home in both Marvel and DC’s sandboxes....

Given just how meagre the resources were behind the scenes, it’s not only remarkable just how great the resulting movie was – a tense siege horror where ghouls are constantly pressing their way into a remote farmhouse – but also how enduring it would become. Late last month, Criterion added Night Of The Living Dead to its hand-picked selection, with a restored Blu-ray release which includes new commentaries, archival interviews and other special features....

Dark Phoenix is the 12th film in the X-Men film franchise, and the second to last movie made under the 20th Century Fox umbrella before the Disney-Fox merger that will presumably bring the X-Men movies into the Marvel Studios fold. As the last film in this category—New Mutants, set to be released in 2020—doesn’t focus on the “main” characters of the X-Men film franchise as we have come to know them, Dark Phoenix is tasked with not only wrapping up its own story, but the stories of the prequels and this era of X-Men on-screen storytelling as a whole....

Players will also be able to pay for the next-gen console in 24 monthly installments through an Xbox All Access subscription, which will also grant you access to 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (now including EA Play) for $34.99 a month. “Set your alarm for the pre-order date as supplies are limited,” the press release from the Xbox PR team read. Xbox fans can only hope that Xbox Series X and Series S pre-orders will run much more smoothly than this week’s PS5 pre-orders, which turned into pure chaos when retailers opened pre-orders earlier than planned....

Young Justice Outsiders Episode 13 If “Nightmare Monkeys” is a sign of what the Young Justice team can do freed from their constraints of a network and a regular tv schedule, “True Heroes” is what happens when they forget that they’re unchained. “True Heroes” is an hour to 90 minutes of show jammed into a 22 minute television episode, a failure of storytelling and imagination that represents the first real turd of an otherwise spectacular return to the world....

In my look at some NES games that were ahead of their time, I mentioned that many of the games that qualified for that list felt like anomalies in the grand scheme of the NES library. While that is still true of some SNES games that often fall into that category, it’s worth noting that some SNES games that were ahead of their time are now so widely accepted to be classics that it can be hard to remember a time when they were anything else....

Yet, I understand why it’s so easy to focus on the superhero games we almost got rather than the ones that we did get. There’s an entire section of gaming’s digital graveyard devoted to canceled superhero games, and it’s filled with projects that could have been contenders or, at the very least, would have given comic book fans everywhere the chance to spend time with characters that still haven’t gotten a proper video game adaptation to this day....

This generation could also be remembered as the one where a reliable, high-speed internet connection became more important than ever, not only for innovative new experiments with online connectivity and the burgeoning battle royal genre, but just to download the hefty updates most AAA games require today. Still, some of the best games of the last few years have been single-player only affairs. Perhaps this is the console generation that embraced the idea that gamers should be able to play what they want, how they want....

This is about films that prey on your mind, get under your skin, have you lying awake at night thinking “What would I have done in that situation?” or wondering what happened to the characters next.
