This recent batch of episodes alone has brought us plot points that include everything from witchcraft to (coming soon!) time travel, leading viewers and this writer to wonder is anything beyond the pale here?...

Her venture is so cut-throat, her underlings sever heads in their enthusiasm....

Fittingly premiering on April 20 a.k.a. the weed holiday “420” the series is told through the eyes of investigative journalist David Holthouse. A man who has built his career chasing monstrous humans, such as Neo-Nazis and sexual predators, Holthouse heard of these Bigfoot murders back in 1993 while laying low to avoid some gangs, and passing time working on the farms in the Redwoods. Now, nearly three decades later, he revisits the region to further uncover the truth behind the story....

Of course the chief reason why this movie goes so hard is its star Jack Black. Not since the 2000 film High Fidelity had a project so perfectly utilized Black’s unique comedic and musical talents, and really, no movie has quite done so since. Anyone that had a stoner friend with access to HBO in the early 2000s has likely heard “Yo, but like, Jack Black can actually sing” while being forced to watch or listen to Black’s comedy rock duo Tenacious D....

It’s no mistake that the opening montage of Season 4 features Donald Trump’s face spewing hate about something or another, followed by images from the wars and terror that so many westerners conflate with Islam. As much as I hate that Isak’s season had to end, if that had to happen to give Sana — one of the few Muslim protagonists on my screen right now — then I am OK with it....

The cast has been gathered from far and wide, ranging from relative newcomers to TV like Diany Samba-Bandza to more familiar faces Natasha O’Keeffe, Thomas Turgoose and Eleanor Tomlinson, and established actors Parminder Nagra, Craig Parkinson and Neil Maskell. Here’s who everybody is playing, and the major roles where you may have encountered them before. Oliver Coopersmith as Echo Nantu-Rose Coopersmith plays space pirate Echo in Intergalactic, his next major TV role since criminal Whitey Brown opposite Tim Roth in Sky Atlantic’s Canadian-set crime thriller Tin Star....

Snowpiercer Season 3 Episode 9 From the very opening moments of Snowpiercer, it’s clear that the train that couldn’t slow down is in for some big changes. Ben (Iddo Goldberg) talks about how people build their lives around loved ones, and when those loved ones are lost, we lose part of ourselves and turn inward to examine who we are, if we did enough, and where we belong in this new world without that person in our lives....

Yet more than just a showcase for the insidious side of Hemsworth’s now familiar comedic charisma, Spiderhead is also a throwback to the type of witty and wicked B-movie that acts as both star vehicle and smarter-than-it-seems chamber piece. It’s also an antiquated form of genre moviemaking that only gets released on streaming these days. Directed by Joseph Kosinski—and developed, filmed, and edited while his last feature, Top Gun: Maverick, sat on the pandemic shelf—Spiderhead appears at a glance to be of a piece with most weekly Netflix releases: a chance for relatively big names to mug for the camera on a streamer that until a few months ago seemed unbeatable....

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 10 Star Trek: Picard wraps up its second season with a finale that is as uneven and frustrating as many of the episodes that have preceded it. From its rushed final mystery to the literal deus ex machina that sends Picard and friends back to the future, there’s a determined air of tying up loose ends for most of the hour, but little in the way of true emotional payoff (or even basic explanation) for the bulk of what we’ve seen this season....

A starship soaring past, through, and around the vibrant colors of the Delta quadrant, complete with vivid nebula clouds? Yeah, we’re getting Voyager vibes from this. Honestly, it’s nice to see a Trek sequence so intentionally playing up the potential wonder and beauty in space exploration. While Voyager didn’t actually lean into those themes, they are aspects of the Trek verse that has been downplayed in recent incarnations. Hopefully, Prodigy, with its stories of Delta quadrant kids finding a spaceship with a Janeway hologram and using it to make their way towards the Alpha quadrant—will lean into that space....

For many, the problem boils down to a matter of focus. Should Star Wars follow the path set by the nine main films and continue to be about the Skywalker family? Or should the franchise branch out and tell stories in a space-traveling world dealing with a galactic empire? Those who believe the latter will get some evidence to back up their point, as early reactions to Andor celebrate the show for its change in direction....

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters kicked off last month with the untold story of Boba Fett’s journey back to Jabba’s Palace after the events of The Empire Strikes Back. Han Solo is still frozen in carbonite on the Slave I, but when the carbonite matrix becomes unstable (which could turn our beloved smuggler into “goo”), Fett is forced to make an emergency stop to Nar Shaddaa, the infamous “Smuggler’s Moon” located smack in the middle of Hutt space....

In an interview with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Smith has finally said yes, he was up for a role in The Rise of Skywalker. But just how far did those talks get? Did Smith actually film anything for the movie that was later cut? “No, I didn’t,” Smith revealed to Horowitz. “We were close to me being in it, but then it just never quite happened....

The newest addition to that motley crew is Nelson Lee’s Dragon King. The terrifying masked scientist is not only the father of Courtney’s new arch-nemesis, Cindy Burman, but also appears to be the ringleader of the Injustice Society and presents a horrifying new threat for the team. Dragon King was born out of Roy Thomas and Rich Buckler’s Justice Society of America expansion book, All-Star Squadron. The series imagined the JSA as heroes in World War II–the era they were first introduced–and also featured Quality Comics additions better known as members of the Freedom Fighters....

While it’s often a good strategy for both storytelling and corporate earnings purposes, splitting a season of television comes with some downsides. Chief among them is that a split season is fundamentally not a complete season. Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 certainly came close to being a complete season of TV. The seven episodes presented were all quite lengthy, filled with compelling dispatches from both Hawkins, Indiana and The Upside Down....

The Roy siblings of Succession may not have known the details, but they knew the men involved in the Waystar cruise line scandal, and that makes them culpable. However, making that point with sincerity and without clever put-downs or cheeky irony was bound to go over as well as a free steak dinner at a vegan lifestyle convention. Sparks fly every time the Roy children get in a room due to a palpable sense of competition, but also the unspoken feeling that only they know what it’s like to grow up with Logan Roy as their father....

Welp, there you have it. After 15 seasons of road trips and high-stakes battles, Supernatural has come to an end—and people have feelings (as they should). Interestingly, the penultimate episode of Supernatural wrapped up the major story arc of the season, leaving the final episode to get a bit more, um, creative with its ending. What did that look like? Pie festivals and vampires, of course. “Carry On” sees Sam and Dean settling back into “normal” life following their definitive battle with God....

Rainbow Rowell bookends the chapters with excerpts from her fictional fantasy series, so you get to watch her write the fanfic and the source material....

The Disney Renaissance also marks one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Hollywood history, a golden age that signaled a genuine rebirth for its genre and form to a new generation. The fact that it shined brightly for a decade before falling out of favor simply increases its mystique since one can trace its meteoric rise and troubling descent. Thus, as a self-professed child of the ’90s, be my guest as we trace the impact on that fleeting era to this very day....

The Expanse Season 2 Episode 13 When looking back at the season 2 finale of The Expanse, it might appear to be the self contained story of a dangerous creature loose on a ship as in the Alien movies with a sidebar following the escape of an important Earth diplomat from a Mars-held ship, and that would actually have been enough. But this finale is so much more, mostly because of the final minutes of the episode, in which it becomes clear that the enemies have only been temporarily defeated and the big picture is larger than we thought....
