If true, the news marks Matt Reeves’ latest reinvention of the Batman mythology as a continual outlier among superhero movies, at least for those in their first outings. Marketed with a severity of tone and a menace of violence so extreme that it surprised many when The Batman received a PG-13 rating instead of an R, the new movie looks to be the darkest interpretation yet of a popular superhero who has repeatedly courted bleak and bleaker visions from filmmakers....

For all the improvements in queer representation in children’s entertainment there are still only a few shows that have queer characters and even less have them take center stage. We’ve seen a growing number of queer main cast members in recent years but many of them (such as She-Ra and Adventure Time) only confirmed their leads were queer in the final episode. Others have queer leads but their queerness isn’t a major factor in the show....

Yet 2021’s Mortal Kombat is both a loving homage to the blood-soaked arcade classics that started it all and a savage, devilishly fun martial arts flick. The film is actually so effective in the latter regard that it transcends the “video game movie” category completely and should in all likelihood attract an audience of people who have never even played the games.
