When I saw the promotions for Netflix’s latest family film Finding ‘Ohana describe it as ‘The Goonies but in Hawai’i’ my immediate thoughts was ‘yes this idea is perfect, I hope they do it well.’ The good news is that Finding ‘Ohana doesn’t just live up to its great premise, it surpasses it, giving us a truly Hawaiian movie with thrills, laughs, loving homages, and an incredible amount of heart....

Lionel Atwill said that in 1941, and let’s just say his timing could have been a little better. Marvel’s Loki episode 2, “The Variant,” wastes absolutely no time. And like some of the best Marvel TV efforts, the Easter eggs and references are numerous, but not all of them are obvious. In fact, a lot of them don’t even necessarily pertain to the MCU! Loki is having fun with genre, TV formulas, and the very notions of time travel itself, so looking to the pages of Marvel Comics isn’t quite enough....

Now, some are already suggesting that Venom is the one narrating that new trailer, but based on the accent and dialog, it seems more likely that’s actually an unseen Kraven the Hunter. Besides, there’s a voice change at the end that seems to clearly signify that Venom is now speaking. That’s right: according to some cynical industry chatter—heard on recent podcasts and seen in this self-satisfied piece, in which the writer actually consults his “cousin Vinny from the Bronx” for his insights into the Disney-owned studio—Marvel Studios is teetering on the edge of disaster. Kevin Feige should resign now, and Disney might want to start thinking about finding a new tenant for Marvel’s offices on the company’s Burbank lot. That’s at least the tone, and all because Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has made more than $700 million worldwide in just two weeks of release (more than the first Doctor Strange’s total box office haul) is somehow a failure....

Of course, the relationship between Mortal Kombat and martial arts films has always been close. Not only did the game utilize a then-revolutionary form of motion capturing that gave it a standout cinematic look, but many aspects of the title were practically taken directly from some of the best and biggest martial arts movies of that era. As the years go on, though, it becomes more and more clear that no martial arts movie impacted the development of Mortal Kombat more than Bloodsport....

– It has to be an actual Mortal Kombat character and not a guest fighter. That means no Freddy Krueger, Kratos, Jason, Predator, or anyone from the DC Universe. – Dark Kahn doesn’t count for the same reason. – It has to be someone who was playable in the one-on-one games. I’m not going to get into boss characters from, say, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero or Mortal Kombat: Special Forces if that’s all they’ve appeared in....

Now, in another house of cards-y move, Netflix is rolling out a very major change to its subscriber acquisition strategy. As first noticed by The TV Answer Man and subsequently confirmed by EW, Netflix is no longer offering a 30-day free trial to new U.S. subscribers. This appears to be the case for most international territories as well, including the U.K. and Canada.
