How’s this for a pitch for The Lego Batman Movie 2? A dramatic ordeal resembling themes from The Godfather Part II and Boogie Nights teaches Batman the value of friendship. Of course, those rather random sources of inspiration—from a dour early 1970s-era epic and 70s-nostalgic 1990s cinematic caricature—may seem like a puzzling plot structure for the kid-friendly animated film franchise, but there was a method to the apparent madness, which was to be based on a script by Rick and Morty’s creative duo, Dan Harmon and Michael Waldron....

The multiple first look previews that Netflix shared for The Witcher season 2 during its TUDUM event seems to indicate that Geralt will become a father figure to Ciri, or at the very least a caretaker and mentor as the young woman trains to become a witcher herself. But what is involved in such an endeavor, and will Geralt’s efforts actually protect the girl in his charge or put her in further peril?...

Twisty-turny thriller The Woman in the Window has arrived on Netflix with some distinct Hitchcockian vibes. It’s based on the bestselling novel by A. J. Finn and directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Anna Karenina, Darkest Hour), with Amy Adams as the titular woman. This is classic high-concept crime drama in the style of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train while the premise is reminiscent of Rear Window. Adams plays Anna Fox, an agoraphobic woman who believes she has witnessed one of her neighbors being murdered in her own home, which she views from out her window....

“We launched into a new chapter of Titans 2.0,” says Greg Walker, showrunner for the DC Universe streaming series. But whatever relative peace our heroes might have hoped for faded quickly as specters from Titans’ past began to emerge. Whether or not the Uncharted movie is able to break what can only be described as the “video game movie curse” remains to be seen. For what it’s worth, though, part of the reason why so many people wanted to see the Uncharted series make the leap to the big screen is that the games borrow so heavily from classic adventure movies such as The Jewel of the Nile, Lawrence of Arabia, and, naturally, the Indiana Jones films....

Here’s what’s coming. Moxie March 3 Netflix kicks March off with Amy Poehler’s second feature film as director. Turning her camera lens to the anarchic battlefield of high school life, Poehler adapts Jennifer Mathieu’s novel of the same name about a young woman named Vivian (Hadley Robinson), who is fed up with the toxic masculinity and sexism at her school. So taking a page from her mother’s (Poehler) former hellraiser youth, Vivian starts an anonymous pamphlet-magazine with a punk rock aesthetic....

Emma of Normandy was Queen consort of England (twice), Denmark, and Norway through two different husbands, later reigning as Regent for her son Harthacnut. We know lots about her because she commissioned a history of herself while still alive to try to smooth things over between two of her sons by different husbands, Edward the Confessor (son of Æthelred the Unready) and Harthacnut (son of Canute), who were wrangling over the throne of England....

Nobody expects puppies and rainbows from the end of the world. Even if they did, after series one, they’d know that War of the Worlds wouldn’t be the place to go looking. This is feel-bad drama, the kind of show where kids get stabbed in the head, streets are lined with baggily attired corpses, and the guff of rotting flesh whooshes out of each newly opened door. Meet a new character?...

But Warcraft is a much bigger and less unique proposition than either of those, with the games themselves a mash-up of decades of fantasy tropes. Consequently, any personality that Jones might have infused in this massive ($160 million) big screen adaptation gets hopelessly lost in translation. Warcraft is not the worst example of its genre, but it is a tedious and forgettable one: it reeks of corporate branding, its story and characters are intermittently entertaining but largely flat, and its visuals run the gamut from impressive to cheap-looking....

But despite the fact that the final episode of The X-Files (so far) ended on yet another frustrating cliffhanger, there has been virtually no movement on a season 12. Four years after Mulder and Scully said their goodbyes to television audiences (for the second time in this millennium), making another season of the hit paranormal drama seems easier said than done. What will it take for The X-Files season 12 to get going and what’s stopped it from happening so far?...

Stargirl Season 2 Episode 5 There’s a lot going on in Stargirl’s second season, from the Whitmore-Dugan clan’s attempt to adjust to life as a superhero family, the newly reconstituted Justice Society of America’s struggle to deal with the fallout from last season’s finale battle with Icicle, and, of course, the constant drag of summer school. Real-life responsibilities are encroaching on our young heroes’ crime-fighting time. Courtney is trying to balance her superhero duties with her everyday life as a student and a sister, Beth’s worried about keeping her parents’ marriage together, Rick is having a somewhat bizarre crisis of conscience over the fate of a being he was determined to murder just a few short months ago....

It’s more than just the story itself. “The Death of Superman” was a media event at a time when comics weren’t necessarily getting mainstream attention. Radio, TV, and traditional print media seized on the opportunity, and casual fans unaware that nobody stays dead in the world of superheroes, genuinely thought DC was bringing the career of its longest-running hero to a close. Since then, the story has been adapted for animation, TV, and the big screen, and characters and concepts from it continue to pop up in new forms....

Prime Video released the first three episodes of The Boys Season 3 on June 3, and there was certainly a lot to unpack. The first episode alone delivered sights never before seen on TV, including the “natural” evolution of Avengers: Endgame’s iconic Ant-Man meme, and a Charlize Theron cameo that happened to be a complete coincidence after her recent MCU debut. Then, there was a broken arm heard around the world, Butcher on a violent mission fuelled by a temporary dose of Compound V, a big reveal for Black Noir, and a tragic, stomach-turning fate for The Deep’s beloved friend Timothy the squid....

Supernatural’s penultimate episode left a lot of fans scratching their heads in confusion. The episode saw Chuck defeated and left helpless while young Jack absorbed his powers and basically became God. There were echoes of the original planned series finale, the fifth season’s last episode “Swan Song,” as Lucifer and Michael fought each other, and both Sam and Dean took a bloody beating from a higher power. After Jack completed a particularly impressive ascension to a higher plane of existence, he left Sam and Dean in their bunker, drinking to lost friends—“to everyone we’ve lost along the way”—and driving off into the sunset....

Instead, Endwalker is a triumph. It’s not only the best FF 14 expansion yet, but there’s a strong argument to be made that Endwalker is as good as an MMO expansion has been and can possibly be. That’s obviously a pretty big statement, but these are just a few of the ways that Endwalker manages to overcome the shortcomings of too many other MMO expansions while building upon the absolute best that this genre has to offer....

There was of course a reason for this: 20th Century Fox, and more specifically studio head Darryl F. Zanuck, had absolutely no faith in the feel-good holiday movie and didn’t even want the audience to know it was a holiday movie. Zanuck’s insistence that the film open in New York City on June 4 probably added to their skittishness toward the subject matter. An all-time Christmas movie classic today, Miracle on 34th Street pivots on the marvelous idea that Macy’s shopping mall Santa Claus (Edmund Gwenn) believes he genuinely is Santa—even going by the name Kris Kringle on his identification....
