Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?” The answer was unexpectedly emphatic, but his strong insistence that Bond should remain male also hints at the larger cultural fault-line the nearly 60-year-old franchise (and even older character) is resting on....

Make him Elton John for all I mind. Just show me a Sherlock who uses genius powers of observation and deduction to solve unsolvable crimes in whatsoever context, with whatsoever number of claws, X chromosomes or Top 10 hits and we’re good....

10.1 The Pilot “Banter” Let’s start by talking about Pearl Mackie. Finding a new angle for a modern-day Doctor Who companion is rightly an ongoing challenge (read Peter Davison’s excellent memoir for his thoughts on how the late executive producer John Nathan-Turner used to go about things), but I thought Mackie blasted her way through The Pilot, and was the clear standout. We’ve only got a few parts of her character thus far, but there’s clear promise....

Doom Patrol Season 2 Episode 4 The theme of families is a constant one in Doom Patrol, but this week the show leans heavily into the notion that our loved ones, especially parents, are the reason we’re all so screwed up. In a 1960s flashback, we see Danny The Street (and not yet a brick) and Niles trying to protect Dorothy by keeping her separated from the world. But they effectively treat her like a prisoner, a choice that is certain to haunt them as Candlemaker appears to be growing in strength....

Dracula Episode 3 If Dracula hadn’t ended his own life, I might have done it for him. Anything to get off this finale’s spinning carousel of orphaned plot threads, hand-wavy explanations and charmless characters. After a supremely entertaining start and a boldly reinvented middle, Dracula screamed to a convoluted end that shed its best qualities and replaced them with too much of nothing in particular. A lack of Sister Agatha was the major issue....

Fear the Walking Dead: Season 4, Episode 8 Fear the Walking Dead has been a tale of two series this season. On one hand, it does kind of seem like a light version of The Walking Dead, what with a discount take on Negan and the Saviors in the Vultures and a brand addition in the arrival of that show’s Morgan. On the other hand, sometimes the narratives have reached levels of near-perfection with the episode “Laura” and the melancholy, porch side dime western via Romero story of John Dorie....

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, the newest, sci-fi-tinged companion series, feels unique, too. After all, it follows a group of teenagers learning to survive in the real world after escaping their utopian settlement. Unlike the rough-around-the-edges characters of the other two series, Iris, Hope, Silas, and Elton were still doing homework, studying, and preparing for graduation when they’re forced to leave their academics behind at the Campus Colony in order to find a missing member of their group....

Just one in a slew of familiar faces Zooming in to 2021’s first major awards show, the Lost in Translation star appeared as a nominee for his work in On the Rocks, his latest collaboration with writer-director Sofia Coppola. Throughout the evening, including before and after Murray’s brief appearance, filmmakers, actors, and actresses were Zooming in from their homes and hotel rooms, often dressed to the nines in tuxedos and gowns....

Gotham Season 5 Episode 12 Here we are, at the end of our Gotham journey. Gotham has been many different shows over the years: a messy panoply of styles that sometimes frustrated, sometimes delighted, but almost always entertained. Last week, the end of the No Man’s Land arc and the end of our present day Gotham excursion could have been a suitable final episode. The denouement was strong, Gordon and the GCPD victorious over Bane and Nyssa Al Ghul, Riddler and Penguin swearing to become criminal anarchists, Bruce Wayne leaving Gotham City to begin his dark destiny, and Selina Kyle tragically abandoned by the young man she had grown to love....

Guillermo del Toro still vividly recalls the first time he saw Walt Disney’s classic animated film, Pinocchio, as a child. That 1940 Disney movie, only the second feature-length effort from the company, is likely darker than most adults remember. And on more than a few occasions it even reaches toward the nightmarish imagery of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio. But del Toro remembers it all. “I was very young and all of a sudden I saw Disney’s Pinocchio,” del Toro tells Den of Geek....

Headey’s assassin single mom Scarlet features in the Netflix’s film opening flashback, which sees Scarlet meeting her teen daughter (played by The Witcher‘s Freya Allan in flashback, and Karen Gillan for the bulk of the film) for a milkshake before escaping into the night for the next 15 years.
